Without a doubt, it was a sad end to USWNT’s World Cup journey. Initially dreaming of a three-peat, it just wasn’t written in the stars for them. After a goalless 120-minute battle, the Americans fell short in the penalty shootout. A lot of people have criticized the US team since their loss including the former US President, Donald Trump too. Certain criticism from a Dutch player had garnered a lot of eyes.
She taunted the US squad and called them ‘big mouths’. From the looks of it, those comments haven’t aged very well. Because the Netherlands is now out of World Cup too! Some hours ago, they lost their quarterfinal against Spain. That game went down to the wire too. Ex-USWNT star Sydney Leroux was quick to hit back at Lineth Beerensteyn’s criticism of the USWNT squad.

In an interview, the Dutch striker commented, “From the start of the tournament, they had really big mouths and were already talking about the final. I was thinking you first have to show it on the pitch before you talk”. The Dutch star also clarified that she wasn’t being ‘rude’ and she had a lot of respect for the USWNT. She also stated that having them out of the tournament was a ‘relief’ for her.
She concluded, “Don’t start to talk about something that is far away. I hope they will learn from that”. Sadly, her comments have re-gone viral for the wrong reasons. Definitely, this isn’t the first time two soccer players have thrown banter at each other in press conferences. It’s been happening for decades and taking all of it in good spirit is key.
