Is Steve Cherundolo really the right choice to lead USMNT, or is he just overhyped?

The hunt for a new manager continues for the USMNT. With the sacking of Gregg Berhalter because of the nation’s poor run in the Copa America 2024, the pressure to hire someone to lead their golden generation increases day by day. Among the preferred names that have emerged is Steve Cherundolo. However, USMNT icon Brian McBride has highlightedone issue’ that lies with the current LAFC boss.

There’s no doubt about the former American international’s quality as a coach. Yet, McBride believes that US Soccer should consider someone else. Chatting on CBS Sports Golazo, the pundit said, “As a player, he [Steve] was always a thinker, just this quite thoughtful, hardworking, extremely good soccer player. When you transfer that onto the coaching side, it works. That part, I think, has shown through with what he’s done with LAFC.”

Despite garnering praise as a player and now as a coach, McBride revealed the major issue with Cherundolo: “The one issue I would have [with Steve] is I think he’s still too green. I mean that in the nicest way. Steve’s going to be a good coach for a long period of time but I don’t think he’s ready for the US men’s national team at this time.”

This is indeed quite a harsh reality check for Cherundolo. Notably, the 43-year-old has led his MLS side to the 2021/22 MLS Cup and Supporters’ Shield. In addition to being a part of three World Cup teams, he has worked with Germany U15, the Hannover 96 youth, and served as an assistant coach for VfB Stuttgart and USMNT under Dave Sarachan.

Yet, seems like this isn’t enough to make his case for the USMNT job. Then, what other options does the USMNT have?

If not Steve Cherundolo, then who should replace Gregg Berhalter?

Like every passing day, Jurgen Klopp was the name that initially circled around the US Soccer Federation. However, it didn’t take much time for the 53-year-old to reject the Star and Stripes, as he wished to extend his managerial sabbatical after leaving Liverpool. While hope glimmered surrounding Steve Cherundolo, it has been shunned with the tag of ‘too early.’

The name is Wilfried Nancy, who led Columbus Crew to the 2023 MLS Cup in his first season as coach.

Moreover, as a homegrown coach for the USMNT, he could be the one to address the issue of the team being tactically outclassed. If an experienced coach is what the fans demand, then Hervé Renard, who led Saudi Arabia in the 2022 World Cup and also worked with the French WNT, is the answer.

So who should take the Star and Stripes to their promised land? Let us know in the comments.
