Last week, USMNT got thrashed out of the 2024 Copa America within the group stages. Today, news broke that the Star and Stripes have officially relieved Gregg Berhalter from his duties. His sacking was anticipated by many as ardent fans would be excited to see the arrival of the new boss to lead the team to greatness. However, nation’s icon Taylor Twellman believes the exit of Berhalter may backfire on the USMNT.
The American pundit took to X and shared his thoughts on the tough call that the US Soccer Federation made on the MNT’s managerial front. He wrote, “It wouldn’t surprise me if Berhalter is more successful with his next endeavor at the club level. Not sure if he wants to get into that right away, but the tactical side to his teams can work with a team he works and sees every day.”
Twellman continued by offering a piece of advice to the USMNT, “As for the #USMNT, the bigger the profile, the better because you have to be bold & brash if you want to be big.” Apparently, for Twellman, this sacking could have several implications for the USMNT. He expressed his confidence in Berhalter to do well in the future if the manager eventually decides to embark on a new managerial chapter.

The ex-forward also warned the Eagles that if they wish to find a replacement for Berhalter, then it certainly has to be a bigger profile. In other words, by sacking Gregg, USMNT has subtly sent a message that they are quite serious about their project and are ready for a rebirth. Hence, the only way they can do this is by bringing a key name to manage the team. So, do they have any options then?

A few names have been floating lately regarding the replacement of Gregg Berhalter. One of them is Jurgen Klopp. The former Liverpool boss is currently off his tactical board and can be a strong and ‘dream‘ choice for the Star and Stripes to consider. Many revered pundits have been in favor of the German boss to lead Christian Pulisic and Co. However, bringing him won’t be easy as MNT would be required to pay the ex-Dortmund boss a handsome salary, more than what Berhalter was paid.

On the other hand, cheaper and more pragmatic hiring could be of current LAFC coach Steve Cherundolo. A USMNT insider earlier reported that though the 45-year-old doesn’t have much experience, his prior achievements with the MLS side, having led them to the 21/22 MLS Cup and Supporter’s Shield could make his case. Regardless, time is of the essence for USMNT if they truly desire to do something in the 2026 World Cup. Otherwise, Berhlater’s sacking will only backfire on them.
