Is Gregg Berhalter holding back US Soccer, or is he the right man for the job?

Gregg Berhalter’s future in the American camp hangs in the balance, as the US Soccer Federation might show him the door after reviewing USMNT’s pre-knockout exit at the Copa America. Since Berhalter’s future remains uncertain, soccer veterans and fans widely pip former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp to take the USMNT’s reins. Amid this vitriol against Gregg Berhalter, former USMNT boss Jurgen Klinsmann has opined that the US team failed to mature and improve when they received a perfect opportunity in the Copa America.

Jurgen Klinsmann spoke about the USMNT’s coach-hiring riddle, in a recent ESPN FC episode. The German boss recalled how he insisted the US Soccer Federation send the US team to Copa Americas because it was a perfect training ground to learn and improve.

“They [USMNT] didn’t mature. They didn’t learn and unfortunately, they went home early. And that’s why the decision they have to make right now is a big one and hopefully they make the right one,” said Jurgen Klinsmann.

To better demonstrate Gregg Berhalter’s side’s shortcomings in the Copa, Klinsmann notably recalled the time he took the US team to a semi-final. He added how the 2014 US team learned a lesson from Lionel Messi’s Argentina during that tournament. Besides, the German legend also delved deeper into the pros of hiring Jurgen Klopp to lead the US team.

The former USMNT boss observed that Jurgen Klopp is a “consistent learner of the game,” and is always cautious about what is happening in the sport across continents. Thereafter, he suggested it is paramount for the US team to evaluate what transpired under Gregg Berhalter in the last two years before they take a call on the team’s future.

He also urged the USSF to consider who is best fit for guiding them into the 2026 FIFA World Cup, again hosted by the US. “If it would be Jurgen Klopp, it would be amazing,” Klinsmann said.

Anyhow, it is uncertain if Klopp will join the USMNT. The former Reds boss is reportedly close to joining the German national team as its head coach after their premature UEFA Euro exit. Uncertainty, yet again, remains a recurring motif in the US camp, as the USSF has yet to decide on Berhalter’s future.

The USSF and Matt Crocker have already taken the heat for rehiring Gregg Berhalter two years back. Only the coming days would tell if Crocker will once again show his infamous affinity towards the 50-year-old boss.
