Erling Haaland’s 2023 was superlative. The striker proved to be the missing ingredient in Manchester City’s quest for European success. Although he narrowly missed the FIFA Ballon d’Or to Lionel Messi, the Norwegian stacked up his fair share of awards. With 50 goals in the calendar year, few players can claim to have had a better 2023. IFFHS certainly seems to think that way, as they have crowned the striker as 2023’s best player. It is not a very straightforward decision, considering the performances of Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe.
With 14 goals, Haaland is the top goalscorer in the Premier League. His recent injury meant the striker could not participate in the CWC. His absence has resulted in Man City losing their ruthlessness in attack. Therefore, Pep Guardiola would be hoping to have his number 9 ahead of the decisive 2nd half of the season.

Significantly, the towering striker succeeded Lionel Messi as the IFFHS Best Player award winner. The jury panel consists of soccer journalists and experts from 120 different countries. The criteria are based not just on individual statistics but on team achievements, too. Both of which the Manchester City man has plenty. The striker enjoyed an impressive 2023 trophy haul with the UCL, Premier League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, and FA Cup. Not to mention, reaching the incredible milestone of 50 goals in the calendar year. All of these led to Haaland accumulating 208 points and bagging the award.
Closely behind him was PSG ace Kylian Mbappe and Inter Miami star Lionel Messi. Haaland secured nearly double the points of second-placed Mbappe (105) and significantly more than Messi (85). Rodri and Jude Bellingham rounded the top 5. Interestingly, this marks the first time a Norwegian won the award.
The previous two winners were Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski. Hence, it’s safe to say that Haaland is in splendid company. Unfortunately, his fresh injury might reduce his chances of securing another prestigious recognition.

The competition for the IFFHS Best Top Goalscorer award is very tight this time around, such that even with 50 goals, Erling could miss out on the award. The stars ahead of him are Cristiano Ronaldo (53), Harry Kane & Kylian Mbappe, with 52 goals each.
Last year, Haaland finished 2nd behind Mbappe with 46 goals. However, this time, it remains highly unlikely that he will even feature in the top 3. The reason is his injury that forced him to miss out on recent matches. It also remains to be seen whether Guardiola risks him in the upcoming match against Everton.
