Have you ever wondered about how the soccer clubs balance between business and the sport itself? For top clubs, spending large amounts may not be an issue, but getting back the revenue depends more on its core performance, sponsors, and the adjacent projects that a club can influence. PSG may be on the tenterhooks with Real Madrid for Kylian Mbappe, but where do they actually stand against their competitors?

Kylian Mbappe may be in a state of ambiguity about his future team, but the 24-year-old is expected to grab a lot of attention from clubs in the January transfer window too. In the build-up for such events, the monetary valuation plays a vital role. What separates PSG from its competitor, Real Madrid if either of them was to acquire the Frenchman’s services?

Other than the clash for Mbappe, the clubs are involved in other battles such as revenue. The revenue Real Madrid generates could likely be definitely more impressive than their French counterparts. A recent report by Marca showed the clubs generating money from jerseys. It suggested that Real Madrid had an advantage of $22 million over the French club. Without a doubt, jersey sales are a big part of revenue.

The clubs use the jersey to advertise the brand, which pays you based on the location of the jersey. Main sponsors usually have it written in the center with a big notable size. The other parts of the jersey bring lesser value due to decreased visibility and priority. Let’s take a look at some of their numbers below.

The report showed Real Madrid generated $190 million, the highest for any club. PSG is third, extracting $168 million after FC Barcelona, who receives $183 million. The sponsorship also comes from the jersey maker, since players using the jerseys benefit them directly. Other sponsors can also pitch in based on the availability of the slot since it can be limited to 4 or 5. How much money do either of them make from jerseys?

PSG’s main sponsors and the Kylian Mbappe situation

In the fight of the gears, the difference between PSG’s and Real Madrid’s revenue is the kit sponsors. Adidas contributes $120 Million out of the total revenue generated from jerseys. On the other hand, PSG’s jersey maker, Nike, contributes just 10 million more than their main sponsor, Qatar Airways, which provides $70 million. PSG had an additional sponsorship boost while Lionel Messi was at the club.

Real Madrid is considered one of the most valuable teams in the world, but limitations in La Liga’s financial rules draw the line. The Qatari bosses expected a whimsical $270 million for the Mbappe. Funnily, the value is more than what the club generates from its jersey revenues. Mbappe chose to stay due to a lack of options, but few clubs will try to sign him in the next available window. Will the Frenchman sign the contract to extend by a year or will other clubs have a chance to sign him with the clause set by PSG? This saga is surely not done!
