Soccer fans witnessed several underdog stories in the recently concluded season. One of those was Wrexham AFC. The North Wales club was in a financial mess after the Covid pandemic. But now the club has won the National League title and earned a promotion to the EFL League Two.

But it wasn’t the only highlight of their season. The club punched above its weight, especially in the world’s oldest soccer competition. Despite bowing out of the fourth round of the FA Cup, the club trumped several Premier League clubs in one stat. They only finished behind Manchester City. Wrexham AFC finish behind Manchester City

The FA Cup final saw a Manchester Derby for the first time. City emerged victorious by a scoreline of 2-1. It was an enthralling FA Cup that saw several underdogs outperforming top clubs. Wrexham did the same. The fifth-tier club managed to qualify for the fourth round and, in the process, defeated the second-division side Coventry City in the third round. 

In the fourth round, they faced Sheffield United, another second-division side, and held them to a draw. However, in the replay, the Red Dragons bowed out after conceding late goals. But it was a brilliant campaign for the Welsh club. Meanwhile, FA Cup recently released a list of top goal-scoring clubs, with Wrexham featuring second on it. Ryan Reynolds’ club scored 15 goals throughout the campaign.

The Red Dragons outscored the finalist Manchester United, only to finish behind champions Manchester City. City scored 19 goals in the tournament. As a team, Wrexham had a fascinating FA Cup campaign. But on individual levels, the club’s two players outperformed many Premier League superstars.

 Super Paul Mullin won the FA Cup Golden Ball

Wrexham rode on the goal-scoring exploits of Paul Mullin last season. The striker was in enormous form last season. Despite missing out on the National League Golden Boot, he helped Wrexham win the league title and promotion. However, he finished on top of the goal-scoring list for the FA Cup, winning the Golden Ball.

Wrexham superstar outscored the likes of Erling Haaland. He scored nine goals (eight in the formal competition and one in the qualifying). Riyad Mahrez of City finished second with five goals. But Mullin wasn’t the only Wrexham player who shined in the competition. Sam Dalby topped the most assists provided list, with four to his name.
