Do the USWNT trailblazers deserve more recognition for their sacrifices and contributions to women's soccer?

The USWNT has entered into a new phase under the leadership of Emma Hayes. It will head into the Olympics with a new outlook and without a few legends from last time. However, their ideologies and footprints will be with the unit for long. The most successful team in women’s soccer has been an ambassador for sporting accomplishments over the years inspiring many to have the winning mentality. But as the USA celebrates its 248th Independence Day today, July 4th, a former national team star Joanna Lohman emotionally reminds its fans about the fights that are worthy of remembering.

Taking to her Instagram, Lohman reminded people about her and her teammates’ heroics off the pitch that achieved reasonable pay for women soccer stars. She wrote, “On average, I made $15,000 a year playing professional soccer. That is not a typo. I was never paid a living wage but I waged the fight for equality and access,” expressing how the times were tough for women athletes during her time. The former player has advocated for equality and inclusivity and suggested increased pay to women soccer stars during her NWSL career.

However, the former USWNT midfielder is satisfied that she and her colleagues have achieved it and feels that it’s a moment to celebrate this Independence Day. She was a part of the US Women’s Squad after winning the 2024 TST, a private tournament attracting diverse teams. Hence, the prize money of $1 million made her celebrate the moment with her family with tears of joy.

She further stated, “If Luna (her daughter) chooses to play sports, she will have opportunities I never did. She could make more money in one year than my career combined, ” citing the bright prospects for the upcoming women’s generations.

USWNT’s head held high on Independence Day

Joanna Lohman also credited others for playing their part. She further said, “And her JoJo fought to create this new reality. How frickin cool is that? Talk about a proof statement of purpose and identity. There were countless women who played their hearts out for the betterment of future generations. There are countless women who do it now. You have changed our country. And, it is YOU who I choose to celebrate this July 4th!” Despite a few controversies last season about a few players not standing for the national anthem during the World Cup, the heads of the USWNT should be held high this Independence Day.
