Emma Hayes and Sonia Bompastor: Is this the ultimate power duo in women's soccer?

Emma Hayes is proving to be the epitome of influence. The USWNT coach has already established herself as one of the best coaches in sports with a mix of tactical and management acumen. However, it appears that her interest in helping has added up to her stature. Recent talks suggested that the Englishwoman had already taken a keen interest in USMNT’s recruitment of a coach. And the latest disclosure from her successor at Chelsea, Sonia Bompastor about her getting there is a testament to the USWNT coach’s reach and care.

The Woman’s Game Podcast hosted Bompastor and she acknowledged that Hayes was in touch with her before signing for the English champions. When asked if she was Hayes had a role in her or spoke to her, she stated, “Yeah, I think we started to speak in November December last year. I was still under contract with OL and I wanted to make sure I was respecting that,” revealing the backend story.

That was not all, the former Olympique Lyon coach also stated, “I think yeah through the different conversations, Emma was supporting because she knew me and what I really felt like was I’ll find a club where they were so much supportive for women.” It appears that the rapport with Hayes was helpful and assuring for the newly appointed coach in WSL.

It appears that the plans have been taking place since the 47-year-old agreed a deal with USA. It was in November last year that Hayes announced that she would be leaving the London-based club after 12 years and struck a record deal with USWNT. But, she ensured that the club would get into the safe hands of the French coach. Meanwhile, both of them are not new to each other.

The soccer world may have just known about the rivalry in Europe but both Emma Hayes and Sonia Bompastor worked together previously. Apart from facing each other a few times in Europe when Chelsea met Lyon in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, Hayes, and Bompastor had spells together in the USA. In 2009-10 the 47-year-old was a part of the coaching staff at Washington Freedom season and Bompastor was a player.

In fact, Hayes also lauded the Frenchwoman last year stating that she was “an unbelievable left-back with an unbelievable wand of a left boot,” before the quarterfinal of the Champions League. Moreover, Hayes also claimed another side to the three-time French League-winning coach. Despite the former French international’s calm demeanor, she also had a playful and witty side felt Hayes. Nonetheless, she has a huge task cut out to maintain the stature of the English Champions. They won the league 5 times in a row and are expected to continue the form this season. But whether the formidable manager keeps the streak, only time will reveal.
