Paris Olympics opening: Quirky and very French, but did it miss the mark without the USWNT?

Events haven’t turned out as expected in Paris. The opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympics was spectacular in its own sense and caught the eyes of artistic enthusiasts globally. Yet, the USWNT and a few other soccer teams were not fortunate enough to take part in what will be called a game-changer in conducting such iconic events. The moments were memorable, from the fashion show on the road top of the river to the return of pop star Celine Dion, the world was left puzzled. Yet, despite getting severe scrutiny from the viewers for what a few call subjective flaws, Emma Hayes has a unique perspective on how it went.

Asked by a journalist from the Athletic, Meg Linehan about her take, she replied, “Very French,” with a bit of ambiguity. However, she further clarified saying, “Quirky, to say the least. But I like quirk.” As the events happened, one thing the fanatics would have realized is that it wasn’t the usual hard-hitting celebration where the Olympic Stadium used to be filled with entertaining performances and fireworks. But this time, it reached beyond the realms of the theater and got the whole culture and people of Paris involved which Hayes has pointed out.

Without going too extravagant on a singular place, it saw not just an increase in the number of live viewers, but a different platform for various artists artists to get creative. And if that’s what is called quirk, Hayes will take such events any day. As a coach, the Englishwoman is known for her tactical intricacies, and off the pitch her tastes don’t seem to be any different. But, she had to witness it like an outsider.

Why were Emma Hayes and USWNT absent from the opening ceremony?

Despite all her appreciation for the event, Emma Hayes and her women were obligated to stay away from Paris due to their profession. USWNT wasn’t part of the celebration as their matches are in distant cities from Paris. The Gals had to play their opening game against Zambia, a day earlier at Nice. Paris being a 9-hour and 45-minute road route from Nice was too far and stressful for their packed schedule giving them no option but to continue their journey without it.
