Phil Parkinson once said, “Why would you prepare to be anything other than successful?“. That sentiment certainly proved to be right against Burton Albion when Elliot Lee used his preparations to strike a winner directly from the corner flank amid tough weather conditions. While taking credit for the goal, the 29-year-old explained how Phil gave him the license to do something like this from set pieces.
Even co-owner Ryan Reynolds couldn’t stop himself from saying “FFS, Elliot Lee“ after his stunning goal. As the final whistle went, Wrexham was down to four games unbeaten, but to add icing to the cake, all four of their previous victories had been clean sheets. Now that they are on par with the table toppers, they are unquestionably in the running for first place. Don’t you agree?
In gusty conditions, free-flowing football was always going to be a challenge, and both sides initially struggled to create clear chances. The swirling wind dictated much of the play, forcing players to adapt and find creative solutions. After the match, Wrexham’s official YouTube channel caught up with Elliot Lee to discuss his standout goal. The reporter asked, “With the wind, the way it was, was that something you planned—trying to test them as much as you could from the corners?”

A blend of preparation, quick thinking, and just a touch of fortune, that’s all it took for the 29-year-old to break the defense. Lee explained, “We work a lot on set pieces, and with Parky, he gives us the license to shoot. That was basically the plan today, just shoot for goal with the wind and see what happens. The keeper will be under pressure, and luckily for me, one’s gone in at the back stick.”
Ryan Barnett and Ollie Rathbone worked tirelessly down the right flank, delivering dangerous balls into the box. Lee came close to connecting with one, showing his determination to break the defense. The decisive moment came after 65 minutes of play. As Lee stepped up to take a corner, his curling delivery caught the wind perfectly. The ball sailed past the crowded area and nestled into the far post, leaving the keeper helpless.
