One battle that had all the drama in the last few years in the English Premier League was between Liverpool and Manchester City. If you think this year couldn’t get any spicier with Arsenal pushing Manchester City until the last day, you are wrong. Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool gave the former triple-winners a run for their money quite a few times. The departing manager, Jurgen Klopp, has left a lot of memories with his battles against City, which will be remembered for a long time. And with the Reds being on the receiving end twice, Klopp recently opened up about a couple of instances, giving a glimpse into the competition.
The manager has been saying a long farewell to the club. And the manager turned heads with his recent take on the two league titles lost to Pep Guardiola. Recalling the 2019 season, Klopp, according to the club’s website, said, “You might remember the game against Manchester City when the ball was pretty much in and John Stones cleared it. It was 11 inches or something. Then City won at Burnley, and the ball was in, by exactly the same difference,” claiming how little thing impacted the run.
Klopp further added, “Can you be more unlucky? Maybe I don’t know, but it’s just a fact. It’s not that I wake up in the night and I think, ‘my God, 11 inches’,” implying that his bonding with the club wouldn’t have changed even if he had won those titles. However, this left the crowd laughing, but the memories for those fans can be tough.

It started in the 2018-19 season when John Stones cleared the ball with just 11mm left to go in against Liverpool and saved the Sky Blues from losing two points as they won 2-1. Subsequently, in another game during the same season, City snatched two more points when Sergio Aguero’s ball just went in by a minute margin involving millimeters. Ultimately, Liverpool finished second on the table that year with 97 points, just one short of City.
Moreover, City also won the 2021–22 season by a margin of one point on the last day. This time they were two goals down to Aston Villa at the Etihad until the 75th minute. But in a miraculous twist of events, three goals within the next six minutes for City sealed their three points, leaving the Merseyside supporters bewildered. Nevertheless, the era has now come to an end. With both managers giving such intense contests, the rivalry will be etched in the hearts of soccer fans forever.
