Gerard Pique has always been known for his daring and ambitious endeavors both on and off the field. From owning two smaller soccer teams in Spain to starting his league, the King’s League, Pique has always been eager to make his mark in the business world. This has been the case highly after his much-publicized split with pop sensation Shakira. However, his most intriguing investment to date has to be his decision to build a hotel on a burial site.

With a staggering net worth of $80 million, Pique has made some significant investments throughout his career. His company Kosmos has further contributed to his financial success. However, it was Pique’s construction project to build a hotel that proved to be a complex and arduous task.

In 2015, Pique’s family company, Kerald Holding, purchased a 32,291-square-foot plot of land in Malaga with the intention of constructing a luxurious hotel. The acquisition came at a hefty price of $21 million. Little did he know that this investment would face unforeseen obstacles that would test his resolve.

In 2022, an archaeologist stumbled upon graves on the plot during routine investigations. What started as a mere discovery soon turned into something much more significant. A total of 250 graves were eventually unearthed, revealing the existence of a necropolis that spanned several centuries in Andalusia, Spain. The ancient burial site dates back over 600 years, making it one of the largest necropolises in the region.

This unexpected revelation caused a halt in Pique’s ambitious project. The presence of the graves brought about legal and ethical concerns that needed to be addressed before any construction could continue. Pique, undeterred, embarked on a relentless battle to continue with his hotel project. After extensive discussions and negotiations, in November last year, Gerard Pique was eventually granted the green light to proceed with the construction.

The tombs, upon closer examination, were determined to be empty, devoid of any human remains. The authorities considered the tombs to be of less value and therefore not significant enough to preserve. With the obstacles cleared, Pique’s hotel project could now resume. While the hotel problem is now a thing of the past, what is of the present is his current dispute with ex-partner Shakira.
