Almost 10 years ago, a 28-year-old player quit soccer. The whole world was shocked as they saw a player, compared to David Beckham, hang up the boots at the height of his prime. Renowned for his Beckham-esque technique on set pieces, the former English international played in the top flight for Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, and Blackburn Rovers.
While he never played alongside ‘Golden Balls’, fans often saw him as the successor of the Manchester United veteran. However, at the age of 28, he decided to call it quits before he could have unlocked his potential. Fans to this day are skeptical and in shock about what happened. During the interview, he said, “I’ve got more money than when I started. If I’ve got £100, I’m alright. I loved football, but then it ran its course.” Former Tottenham star Stephen Carr also joined him and said, “As a coach, you’re in early and home late, so you need to have a real desire and hunger. If you don’t love it enough, you should never get into it.”
Both of these stars are now involved in the restaurant business. Bentley spent three years in Spain before relocating back to the UK, becoming involved with the La Sala group. As per reports, he now owns a chain of bars and various other businesses.
While reflecting on his alternate career, Bentley said, “I’ve learnt so many things being attached to businesses. With what I do now, every day is different. It really is exciting. Football; yes, it gives you comfort but in the end it became… it wasn’t exciting.”
