Dreaming of Winning Treble at Manchester City, Erling Haaland Denied to Trademark Own Name Despite $40 Million Net Worth

It’s a common practice for athletes to trademark their names so that others can’t use them for their benefit. Manchester City star isn’t an exception to this. Erling Haaland is gaining popularity, especially after his move to the Premier League champions last summer. Regarded as the next big thing in soccer, the Norwegian wanted to trademark his name.

But to his dismay, the Norway authorities rejected his application. It came as a shock to the City striker. However, it shows how complex intellectual property laws are. Even superstar athletes aren’t immune to it. Let us take a look at the reasons for which the application got rejected.

Norway authorities reject the demand of Erling Haaland 

Haaland, with Kylian Mbappe, is considered the successor to the legacy of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. After plying his trade in Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund, he took an enormous step by joining Manchester City. He took the mantle of goal-scoring at City and returned the club’s investment with a sensational season. The stature of Haaland increased after his Premier League move.

Owing to these, he made three applications to the Norwegian Industrial Property Office via the law firm Schjodt. Norwegian outlet VG reported it recently. The three applications included trademarking his name, signature, and lotus celebrations. The authorities accepted the other two applications, rejecting the trademarking of his name application.

The reason being there’s already another application for the name. According to reports, an individual from Oslo applied in 2022 and wants to use Erling Haaland’s name on his clothing brand. The City striker has three months to appeal the decision. Also, he can get it done if the original applicant does not use the name for the next five years. 

It remains to be seen what course of action Haaland takes. Meanwhile, despite the rejection, the striker will focus on the game against Inter Milan to achieve his biggest dream.

After making a move to City last summer, Haaland has been in sensational form. He broke the record for most Premier League goals in a single season by scoring 36. It helped City to clinch the Premier League title. After lifting the Premier League trophy, his biggest dream is to achieve a treble with the club in his first season.
