Wrexham AFC has ticked several boxes recently. The club won the Vanarama National League and got an automatic promotion to EFL League Two. The world’s third-oldest soccer club got three new sponsorship deals. They tied down Ben Foster for one more year.

Moreover, they will play high-profile games against Chelsea and Manchester United on the US tour. The only box that remains is the squad upgrades ahead of the next season. Reports link Wrexham with a host of players, with a former Manchester United starlet as one of them. However, a Stoke City insider has warned the Red Dragons over the transfer.

Nick Powell is the top name on the transfer list for Wrexham, ahead of EFL League Two season. The club is actively following the midfielder, who started his career as a forward. He is available for free after Stoke City released him this season. Powell made the news when United bought him from his boyhood club, Crewe Alexandra, at 18. However, his stint didn’t go well at Old Trafford.

He played on loan for Wigan Athletic, Leicester City, and Hull City. His first loan spell at Wigan was impressive. Wigan signed him permanently from United after two failed loan stints. Most recently, he played for Stoke City for four seasons. Nonetheless, inconsistencies and a series of injuries marred his career. And now, a Stoke City insider has warned Wrexham over injuries.

Stoke City reporter Peter Smith talked to North Wales Live over Powell. He said, “Well, it was a frustrating start and a disappointing end, but the bit in the middle was very good, at least on an individual level. It took him half a season to get a place in the starting XI. But from January 2020 to the summer of 2021, he was Stoke’s standout player and one of the best in the Championship, a deserved player of the year.”

Smith labeled Powell as an excellent soccer player. He feels the former Stoke City star has good soccer knowledge and keeps nicking the balls in dangerous areas. According to Smith, Powell isn’t a typical number ten. Powell can contribute more, but injuries have kept him away from getting on top of his game.

“But he’s also had dreadful luck with injuries. We’ve barely seen him over the last couple of seasons. There was a consensus that Stoke couldn’t afford to rely on someone who was so infrequently available,” Smith added. It will be interesting to see whether Nick Powell ends up at Wrexham.
