The first gameweek is over with the 2nd set of games is upon us. Wales and Iran played their 2nd game of the competition in what was a crucial Group B clash. The first half of the game ended in a stalemate, with both teams having their fair share of chances. However, the 2nd half was full of drama with Welsh goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey receiving a red card. However, with an extra man, Iran managed to win the game by scoring two goals in the extra time.

Rouzbeh Cheshmi opened the scoring for Iran in the 90+8th min with a long ranger. 3 minutes later, Ramin Rezaeian scored the 2nd goal to break Welsh hearts and potentially end their hopes of reaching the knockout stages.
It was an unnecessary tackle from the goalkeeper, despite the team having a defender back. Fans were surely not pleased with the tackle from Hennessey and took to social media to react to the same.

Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey didn’t see his own defender from the back and ran toward Mehdi Taremi, who had his eyes on the ball. Hennessey missed the ball with his kick and clashed with Taremi. The referee awarded a red card to the goalkeeper, who was replaced by Leicester goalkeeper, Danny Ward.

The referee first awarded a yellow to the goalkeeper. However, Iran protested as Taremi went on the ground due to the contact. The referee decided to check the VAR and later changed his decision to a red card. This became the first red card of the FIFA World Cup.
Group B’s status at the FIFA WC after Iran’s win over Wales
Wales now lies at the bottom of the table with just one point from two games. It has all but ended its World Cup run. However, they are mathematically in the run for the knockout and will have to depend on the other team’s results.

Meanwhile, Iran now takes the 2nd spot in the Group B table with 3 points from two games. They were battered in their first game against England. However, they came back stronger and cruised past Wales by scoring 2 goals. They will face the USA next in the final group game of the soccer world cup.
The USMNT faces England later today in their 2nd game of the competition. Everything is at the stake for the US side as they drew their first game against Wales. They will be poised to bounce back against competition favorites England and secure their position for the Round of 16.
