Women in the sporting world have had to work extra hard over the years to make a credible name for themselves. More often than not, women in patriarchal societies are painted for a lot of things other than their achievements. Switzerland women’s footballer Alisha Lehmann is a victim of this phenomenon. The soccer player, who is trolled as she is known more for her Instagram followers and looks rather than soccer, finally shut them down by winning her first FIFA World Cup match with Switzerland.

Last night saw Switzerland defeat the Philippines 2-0 in their opening fixtures of the tournament. Ramona Bachmann opened the proceedings for the Swiss women. She converted a penalty before halftime. The Philippines head coach however thought that the goal was more of a luck than anything. “It’s just a moment in the game. There are hundreds of moments that happen in the game, and that just happened to be in the penalty box. (The Swiss) had luck in that moment,” said Alen Stajcic as per AP News.

The second goal from Seraina Piubel for the Swiss was a rebound goal that ricocheted off Philippines goalie Olivia McDaniel. While both goals could be considered lucky, the Swiss deserve credit for being in the right areas of the pitch at the right time. The Philippines head coach also agreed with this. He said, “They made their own luck with good play.”
