After an embarrassing defeat, Manchester United legends are not happy with the club’s current condition. In a disappointing turn of events, Erik ten Hag and his men suffered a 2-0 defeat against West Ham in a Saturday match. The loss has sparked criticism from former Manchester United legends, Peter Schmeichel and Paul Scholes.

Under Ten Hag, Manchester United had shown signs of improvement in their previous encounter against Liverpool, where they secured a valuable point in a goalless draw at Anfield, despite playing without their captain and also getting a red card late in the game. However, their performance at the London Stadium did not live up to expectations as they fell to a defeat against West Ham.

Former goalkeeper and United legend, Peter Schmeichel did not hold back in his criticism of the team, particularly targeting the manager while showing support to some players. He remarked, “There are too many players in that #mufc team that don’t deserve to play for Manchester United.”

Adding to the criticism, former United midfield maestro, Paul Scholes highlighted Erik ten Hag’s side’s inability to score goals. He expressed his worries, stating, “Goalscoring is a big issue. Four games without a goal, without creating anything, really.”

Scholes further emphasized, “The attacking players have to step up, bring some confidence, and bring some threat to the team.” Having brought so much glory to Manchester United, it is clear to see why these legends are disheartened by the club’s recent decline and expect better from the current squad.

Moreover, the defeat against West Ham has impacted Manchester United’s standing in the Premier League table. With the loss, West Ham has overtaken Ten Hag’s side, currently sitting in 6th place while the Red Devils have dropped to 8th. Now let’s take a look at how the events unfolded during this match.

Manchester United crumbled in the second half

Manchester United faced concerns even before the game started, with a lack of fit defenders in their squad. Consequently, Erik ten Hag made the bold decision to field 19-year-old Willy Kambwala for his senior team debut. The defensive performances from both teams were solid during the first half.

However, in the 72nd minute, Jarrod Bowen from West Ham broke through and put his team ahead. To make things worse for Ten Hag’s men, just six minutes later, Mohammed Kudus doubled West Ham’s lead. Unfortunately for United, this sealed their fate as they failed to convert any of their 11 shots into goals and ultimately lost the match with a score of 2-0.

In the post match, Ten Hag addressed the lack of goals, stating, “It is always [the case] when the strikers don’t score for a couple of games, then the confidence will go, will decrease. But they have to believe. And they proved in the past they can do.”

With Ten Hag and United under immense pressure, their next game will be all the more important, considering they will be playing Aston Villa, who at the time of writing, are comfortably in the top 4, currently second in the table.
