“I’d rather you take a swing at me,” wrote Alexi Lalas recently on his very own personal space, X (formerly Twitter), sharing a video of Houston Dynamo FC captain Hector Herrera spitting behind the back of the referee, intended as a warning. While that’s something for the jury to debate, what may intrigue many is Lalas’ outspoken nature. Those who have known the USMNT icon for a long are aware of his blunt sports talking. But what about other aspects, say politics? Does Lalas has something to say about the 2024 U.S. election tug-of-war between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris?
Luckily, Los Angeles Times writer Kevin Baxter was able to catch up with Lalas at the Tarzana diner. Naturally, with the political atmosphere intensifying around the U.S., Baxter wondered whose side Lalas was on for the presidential race. However, the now-pundit’s social media activity reminded him that their ideologies didn’t align; Lalas has continued to support Donald Trump.
But why exactly? Well, it appears that while the former defender leans toward the Republicans, he views sports and politics similarly. ‘When it comes to politics, I enjoy it. It’s interesting to me. It’s entertaining to me.’ There’s a touch of irony here, as Lalas has often taken sly digs at politics on X. Yet, even though he once called the Elon Musk-backed platform ‘not representative of the world,’ he still enjoys the interaction and debate, recognizing it as only a ‘very, very small sliver of the world.’

In other words, politics is not just limited to being a Democrat or Republican; rather it’s about choosing what aligns with his common sense. “I look at things and if it makes sense to me, I’m for it,” Lalas said. “I know it when I feel it. I know what is right, what I believe. And that’s what I go with.”

A rather calm response from Lalas, who didn’t bother sharing his thoughts vocally like he always does on social media. While his political ideology looks to be somewhat more on an analytical approach, has he ever thought of making his way into the political sphere?
Is Alexi Lalas’s interest in the Donald Trump vs. Kamala Harris race enough to inspire him to enter U.S. politics?

Former Major League Baseball star Steve Garvey ran for the Senate in California this autumn. Additionally, former NFL linebacker Colin Allred, also currently a member of the House, ran for the Senate in Texas. So as a former US Men’s National Team icon, can we see Alexi Lalas ever enter into the political arena?

“Not anytime soon. But I don’t ever say never,” he shared with Kevin Baxter. Of course, looking at how active he remains in the political world, we shall expect him to grab the opportunity if it comes someday. After all, he himself says, “This is the greatest country in the world and it’s worth defending and it’s worth being proud of.” Isn’t it Alexi?
