The Canada Women’s Soccer team is currently in deep water. Following the revelation of their drone spying scandal at the Paris Olympics, head coach Bev Priestman has been suspended, and the team has incurred a deduction of six points. Consequently, they have experienced intense criticism from both fans and pundits alike. However, in an unexpected turn of events, renowned soccer legend Didier Drogba has offered his support with an unpopular perspective.
As one of the torchbearers at the Paris Olympics, Drogba was recently interviewed by journalist Ariel Helwani. The 46-year-old was questioned regarding Canada’s use of drones to monitor New Zealand’s tactics, a topic that raises questions about its prevalence in soccer. Surprisingly, the Chelsea legend expressed a surprising viewpoint. “It happens a few times and I mean, it doesn’t really affect the result of the game,” stated Drogba.
I asked Chelsea legend Didier Drogba today what he thought of the Canadian Women’s National Team getting caught using a drone to spy on Team New Zealand, and specifically if this is really common practice in football.

He asserted that while observing opponents’ strategies through drones might influence certain situations during play, success ultimately comes down to preparation and skill. “It affects some situations, I believe, of the game. But the end result, when you’re good and you know what you prepared, you know how to win,” Didier Drogba added.
He further elaborated on his stance by stating, “You know how to play and how to win. And for me, I mean, they just caught them. That’s it. You know, it’s part of the game.” This perspective is certainly unconventional, however, it appears that FIFA does not endorse this view. Following the suspension of Bev Priestman from the Olympic Games, she has now been issued a one-year ban by FIFA.
Consequently, the ambitions of the Canada Women’s National Team to secure back-to-back Gold Medals have been jeopardized due to a 6-point deduction in their group standings. In addition, recent controversies have turned the team into a laughingstock with even USWNT star Midge Purse taking a moment to troll them.

During their conversation, the NJ/NY Gotham FC star questioned Coach Bev Priestman’s team’s usage of drones, remarking sarcastically that they should “cheat better.” She stated, “Did you think they weren’t gonna see the drone? I’m confused. Drones are loud. Like… cheat better.”

This candid criticism left Mewis momentarily speechless, demonstrating the impact of Purce’s remarks. Canada Women’s team entered the Paris Olympics as defending Gold Medal champions and strong contenders for victory again. Nonetheless, these ongoing challenges cast a significant shadow over their aspirations and trajectory moving forward.
