Gregg Berhalter was the favorite to extend the term as head coach of the USMNT. Meanwhile, the controversy struck US Soccer that kept Berhalter away from the job. The federation didn’t offer him an extension after the Reyna saga. The search for a head coach continues, but the team legend wants to help in another way.
US soccer legend wants to help in another way
Landon Donovan is a household name in the US soccer environment. The 41-year-old is currently the manager and executive of San Diego Loyal of USL. The former LA Galaxy icon has been recently inducted into the Hall of Fame by US Soccer for his contribution to the nation’s soccer. With 57 goals for the national team and three back-to-back FIFA World Cup appearances, he is one of the US icons.

While speaking about the Hall of Fame induction, he was asked about the USMNT head coach role. Donovan said, “Do I want to be a candidate? No,” while dismissing all the speculations. The LA Galaxy legend added, “Do I want to help? Absolutely. And so if there are ways that I can help them, I want to be helpful,” keeping the door open for involvement with the national team.
Recently, Donovan was one of the Hall of the Fame inductee with other former soccer superstars. DaMarcus Beasley, Jill Ellis, Lauren Cheney Holiday, Kate Sobrero Markgraf, and Slavisa “Steve” Zungul were other inductees for this year. Hope Solo, last year’s inductee, was also inducted this year.

After Gregg Berhalter left, Anthony Hudson took over as the interim for USMNT. The search for the head coach is going on. US Soccer recently hired Matt Crocker as the sporting director. The federation created a new position, Vice President of Sport, to help Crocker in sporting decisions and search for a new head coach.
US Soccer hired former superstar Oguchi Onyewu in the role, who will help the sporting director in federation initiatives like fundraising and youth development. There are several names discussed for the head coach role. A few reports suggest Jesse Marsch as the favorite to take over the managerial role of USMNT. When will US Soccer succeed in getting a head coach remains to be seen.
