Is Alex Morgan's success partly due to the unwavering support from her husband, Servando Carrasco?

Alex Morgan is a legend in her own right. With over 224 appearances, 123 goals, and two World Cup titles for the USWNT, the forward has cemented herself as one of America’s most decorated athletes. But today, we turn away from the spotlight on the field and zoom in on her personal life. As she steps into retirement, Alex Morgan will be savoring time with her family. While she’s happily married to her husband, Servando Carrasco, we can’t help but wonder—what’s the story behind these soccer sweethearts? Let’s delve deeper.

Off the pitch, in love- how Alex Morgan met her match in Servando Carrasco

Just like Morgan, Carrasco too is a soccer player. Somehow, their passion for the beautiful game made them cross paths at the University of California, Berkeley. Though it isn’t exactly known how the two first met, the San Diego Wave star once disclosed on her social media that it was she who made the first move on Steven.

This revelation was made back in 2023 while wishing her husband a happy birthday on Instagram. Posting a selfie, she wrote a caption saying, “Decided to shoot my shot on this day 16 years ago. Pretty damn happy with how it turned out every day after that. Happy birthday to my one and only!” In the meantime, both stood out for their school’s soccer team, the Golden Bears, between 2007-2010.

While Carrasco was promoted as the co-skipper of the men’s team, Alex contributed to the team to lead them to the NCAA Tournament four years in a row. Sadly, the end of college brought the couple to a stage that most couples fear; a long-distance relationship. The year 2011 saw Morgan move to the Western New York Flash team of the Women’s Professional Soccer League, while Seattle Sounders drafted Carrasco.

However, a couple of years later, Servando decided to take the next big step as his relationship grew. The former La Galaxy star proposed to Morgan in December 2013. It was a romantic gesture, as he planned the special moment during an off-season trip to Manhattan Beach, California, where they watched an annual fireworks show together.

“He was planning the proposal for that night and asked me to stand up, and then asked me to marry him. We rode our beach cruisers to my dad’s house to celebrate and have champagne with our family and friends,” shared Morgan, in an interview earlier. The following year, both finally tied the knot in 2014 in Santa Barbara, California, that too, on New Year’s Eve.

But once again, professional commitments forced the love birds to live separately even after exchanging vows. “It’s far from ideal to be that far from your wife,” shared Carrasco earlier. While long distance wasn’t easy for either of the soccer stars, they were ready to make this sacrifice. It only strengthened their relationship, knowing that the post-retirement days would eventually see them living under the same roof.

2020 was the year that completely changed the lives of the star couple. Carrasco decided to hang up his boots, having last played for Inter Miami CF II. Taking a retirement call at 32 wasn’t expected, but it did have a meaning knowing something new was beginning in their lives.

The beginning of the Morgan-Carrasco family

They posted a picture of a beach while posing with their dogs with a letter board that read, “Adding 1 more to the fam…April 2020 #BabyGirl.” On May 7, 2020, almost six years after the couple tied the knot in 2014, welcomed Charlie Elena Carrasco. Now, the USWNT icon is going to be a mother of two very soon. The 35-year-old disclosed on September 5, 2024, that she is expecting another child. “Charlie is gonna be a big sister. I’m pregnant,” she said while addressing her retirement in a 4:30 minute-long clip. “As unexpected as this came, we’re so overjoyed. To me family means everything. Expecting another child, Morgan had the option to take maternity leave from soccer. Instead, she chose to retire and focus on being a full-time parent with Carrasco. Good times ahead!
