It’s been almost two seasons since Cristiano Ronaldo made a move to Saudi Arabia. Despite the early doubts, it’s safe to say the Portuguese superstar has transformed the league. Cristiano has been a game-changer for soccer in Saudi Arabia with his arrival, paving the path for other European superstars to move to the Middle East.
Prominent soccer journalist Fabrizio Romano during a podcast with Mics opened up on the player’s impact on the Saudi Pro League, claiming people were very unsure about the league’s future in the beginning.
Fabrizio stated, “It’s an incredible growth after bringing this kind of players. I think people are starting to understand it’s not just about money when there are big players on the pitch. When Cristiano [Ronaldo] moved to Saudi, people were still not confident. It’s not going to be long-term. It will be just a couple of months, and then it’s gonna disappear like China. Now the feeling is completely different.”

Fabrizio’s words aren’t surprising considering Saudi Arabia, similar to China, has used money to lure in players. However, unlike the Chinese Super League, the Saudi Pro League seems to have a concrete structure. Additionally performances from Al Hilal on the global stage have also inspired confidence amongst the fans who believe SPL has a sustainable future.

Romano believes Saudi Arabia knew what they were doing when they came in for Ronaldo. The journalist stated, “Cristiano Ronaldo changed everything in the Saudi League. When an entire industry and an entire organization like Cristiano Ronaldo moves to a league, he attracts attention. There are a large number of players & agents who became believers in coming to the league after he came.”
Cristiano Ronaldo signed with Al Nassr back in December 2022, signaling the start of a new era. While the player has failed to reach any major success with the team, things have been phenomenal off the field. Al Nassr and other top teams in Saudi Arabia have hugely benefited from the deal with many top players worldwide now open to be a part of the Middle Eastern project. Something that would be a pipedream without Ronaldo!
