Real Madrid has won their 15th Champions League but the man dominating the headlines is Kylian Mbappe. The long-awaited transfer saga has finally reached its end as Fabrizio Romano confirmed the contract signing. Considering his marketability and arrival as a free agent, it is natural for Mbappe to earn monstrous wages in Spain. Interestingly, it has been reported that the winger’s pay at Madrid is significantly lower than that at PSG. What is the reason for this? Let’s find out below.
As reported by Sky Sports, Kylian Mbappe will receive a one-time signing bonus of over $92 million. The prolific attacker putting pen to a 5-year deal will earn over $14 million annually after taxes. This is a fair amount of cash but nothing compared to what he earned at PSG. As part of Mbappe’s current contract, he was earning $1.4 million weekly as per Capology!

Yet, this is not something bad at all. Kylian Mbappe’s willingness to accept a lower salary proves that his eye is on the sporting project and not on the finances. The Frenchman could have signed for pretty much any club in the world. Yet, his preference for Real Madrid would have undoubtedly impressed Florentino Perez.
But, Kylian Mbappe has been a long-term target for Los Blancos. In fact, the signing of the Frenchman was more clamored than say, Jude Bellingham. Notably, Mbappe had even rejected a last-minute move to Madrid in 2022. Hence, it’s surprising that the French attacker is not only on reduced wages but nowhere close to being Madrid’s best-paid player. What could be the reason? Let’s dive in.

When the inevitable deal was confirmed, it was expected that Kylian Mbappe would be Madrid’s best-paid player by some distance. Yet, it didn’t turn out, and he couldn’t eclipse Toni Kroos, earning $26 million annually. Surprisingly, even last year’s signing Jude Bellingham earns more ($22.5 million).
However, Madrid’s approach is a wise one. Previously, there were reports that Real Madrid was concerned about causing unrest in the squad by giving Mbappe huge wages. That is a fair explanation considering that this a side that has won 4 Champions Leagues in the last 7 years!
Moreover, Real Madrid could always reward Kylian Mbappe with a new contact should he deserve so. After all, he has yet to prove anything in Spain. It seems Los Blancos have learned carefully from the situation of Eden Hazard. The Belgian arrived on big wages following an impressive Chelsea stint but was subpar at the Bernabeu. By all probability, there won’t be a repeat of the situation with Kylian Mbappe.
