The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup has finally kicked off. There have already been many interesting matches in the prestigious tournament so far as teams around the world continue to rally for glory. While for some players this is a straight back-to-back World Cup, for others it’s the first installment. Likewise, a few are coming into the tournament with their own life stories, and you’ll be surprised to hear the one about Colombia’s Linda Caicedo.

This year’s Women’s World Cup features a lot of teenage superstars, and Linda Caicedo is one of them. Although it may be quite an achievement to play in such a prestigious tournament at such an age, the life baggage that such talents carry actually makes their journey even more intriguing.
Speaking of Caicedo’s journey, the Colombian superstar is representing her nation at the age of just 18 years old. However, the road to such glory wasn’t an easy one for her. Unfortunately, when Caicedo was 15 years old, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Notably, she had already made her professional and senior debut with her country at that time.

However, even after such obstacles, the forward was able to stand strong and continue playing the sport she loved. Additionally, things got even better for her as she made her big move to Real Madrid back in February. In fact, she even featured in Columbia’s fixture against South Korea, which they recently won 2-0. Furthermore, she scored her first goal at the World Cup.
Indeed, it is a significant achievement for Caicedo. Her goal and debut make it even more special, having defeated cancer. Even after going through such difficult phases of her life, she was able to overcome the obstacles and leave a mark on the pitch.
An easy win for Columbia
Undoubtedly, hearing Caicedo’s life journey must have brought tears to a few eyes. Her nation would be proud of her achievement after hearing what she endured. Speaking about the match, it was the first match for Columbians that ended on a high note. Catalina Usme broke the deadlock against the Asian side, and Caicedo scored the second goal. Both goals were scored in the first half, as they were able to hold the score till the 90th minute.

The win gives them second place in Group H behind Germany, who won against Morocco earlier. While both South Korea and Morocco are sitting at the bottom with nil points. The next fixture for Columbia is against the leaders, Germany. Certainly, they’ll be looking to win this one. Also, Caicedo will also be keen to score in the next fixture.
