While the team’s attacking prowess certainly lacked firepower and rightly deserved criticism, one cannot complain much about the defensive discipline shown by the USWNT. One of the main reasons behind this was 23-year-old defender Naomi Girma.

In a recent interview with GOAL, Naomi Girma opened up about her inspirational coming-of-age story. The San Diego Waves defender started her soccer career at the age of 14 thanks to her father and brother’s keen interest in the sport. She joined an Ethiopian group started by her father. Later she climbed up the ranks through years of hard work to wear the jersey of the illustrious USWNT.

“I started playing at Maleda Soccer, which is an Ethiopian group that my father formed with some of his friends,” she told GOAL. “My dad and my brother influenced me a lot… my Dad loved playing growing up and my brother just started playing and I wanted to be him,” said the rising star.
