The recent conclusion of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 brought with it an incredible level of excitement and anticipation. The tournament proved to be one of the most popular standalone women’s sporting events. As is often the case with major sporting events, the popularity of the tournament also translated into impressive jersey sales. However, one England superstar found herself facing disappointment as global brand Nike decided not to produce her jersey.

The final of the Cup saw Spain and England, two teams that had never previously won the competition, face off for the prestigious prize. Though Spain emerged victorious with a 1-0 victory, England’s performance throughout the tournament was nothing short of impressive. One player who shone particularly bright was goalkeeper Mary Earp. Her talent and skill on the field captured the attention of fans but still, she got ditched by Nike.

Nike made the surprising decision last month not to release Earps’ goalkeeper kit for purchase. This decision drew criticism from the player herself and the fans. Many of them wanted to show their support for the talented goalkeeper by purchasing her jersey. In response, petitions were started in an attempt to persuade Nike, a brand with an estimated worth of $31 billion, to reconsider their choice.

One would have thought that Earps’ stellar display in the World Cup, where she was instrumental in England’s journey to the final, would have been enough to change Nike’s decision. As the Lionesses’ first-choice goalkeeper, Earps proved herself to be a formidable force. The 30-year-old ultimately won the prestigious golden glove award for her outstanding performance between the posts.

However, Nike issued an update on their decision, where they did not confirm producing Earps’ jersey for the time being. They did, however, promise to reassess their choice for future tournaments. The statement read: “We hear and understand the desire for a retail version of a goalkeeper jersey and we are working towards solutions for future tournaments, in partnership with Fifa and the federations”.

The absence of Earps’ jersey from Nike’s line-up begs the question of why such a decision was made in the first place. With her heroics on the field and the support for her inclusion, it seems puzzling that Nike would neglect it.
