In the realm of soccer, goals aren’t just about scoring; they’re about the skill, the artistry, and the moment. And on last weekend at Goodison Park, Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho etched his name into the record books, as he scored a wonder goal that has left fans and pundits mesmerized. However, despite Garnacho’s acrobatic overhead kick goal, a former Chelsea star believes that Dennis Bergkamp’s World Cup goal was much better than Garnacho’s.

While Garnacho’s goal was undoubtedly a spectacle to behold, it sparked a debate among soccer enthusiasts. Despite being reminiscent of Wayne Rooney’s iconic strike, and even Cristiano Ronaldo’s strike, the former Chelsea icon snubs Garnacho.

In an ESPN FC debate, Chelsea legend Mario Melchiot found himself pondering a question: Is Garnacho’s bicycle kick superior to Dennis Bergkamp’s iconic goal in the 1998 World Cup against Argentina? “I mean, Bergkamp maybe, because of the occasion & where it was scored,” Melchiot stated. “And the expectation and playing for your country is always great. But, the way Garnacho scored, and what he did yesterday, Oh my god! Just the skill-wise, I go for Garnacho. The bicycle kick was wow!”

Melchiot’s assessment of both spectacular goals highlights the importance of context in evaluation. Dutch legend Dennis Bergkamp’s strike was scored on the grandest stage of international soccer while carrying the weight of national colors amid the pressure of the World Cup. Whereas, Garnacho’s goal, while technically impressive, came in a Premier League match, albeit a significant one.

Manchester United boss fires warning to Alejandro Garnacho

Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag believes that Garnacho could become one of the best players in soccer. However, the former Ajax manager cautioned Garnacho after his stunning overhead kick against Everton earned comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney. Ten Hag urged fans and experts to not draw any comparisons of the 19-year-old with two of the club’s legends.

“Don’t compare, I don’t think it is right,” ten Hag said in his post-match press conference. “They all have their own identity, but for Garnacho to go that way he has a lot to come, he has to work very hard.”

Ultimately, the debate over which goal is superior is a matter of personal preference. It is quite evident that Garnacho has etched his name alongside Ronaldo, Bergkamp, and Rooney. it’ll be interesting to see Garnacho return to action when United plays their next match.
