In an interview, Nasser Al-Khelafi stated that he is astounded and baffled by the spotlight on the Super Bowl, compared to the Champions League final. As soccer is one of the most widely followed sports across the world, the Super Bowl attracting a larger viewership when compared to soccer left him puzzled.

When asked, “You once said that you don’t understand why the Super Bowl is a bigger event than the Champions League final. What did you mean by that?”

Al-Khelafi replied, “Soccer is the biggest sport in the world. The Champions League final is the biggest club soccer event in the world. I have a lot of respect for the Super Bowl, it’s something fantastic. “

“However, it is an American sport, and soccer is the most popular sport in the world. It is more recognized. Therefore, something needs to be done to attract similar interest to the final itself as a specific show. That’s why it’s so important to bring about significant changes in soccer,” he added.

The comparison between the Super Bowl and the Champions League final might initially seem like an apples-to-oranges scenario. Super Bowl is aimed at a grandiose showcase of American football, whereas the Champions League represents the pinnacle of club soccer. However, Al-Khelafi’s concerns stem from the perception of the events rather than their intrinsic qualities.

Al-Khelafi’s remarks focus on the need for soccer to borrow a page from the Super Bowl’s playbook. It emphasizes the importance of elevating each Champions League match into an event and entertainment extravaganza.

Al-Khelafi’s vision for the Champions League final

Paris Saint Germain owner and chief Nasser Al-Khelafi believes that the Champions League final has the potential to be an even bigger event than the Super Bowl. He has called for significant changes to be made to the format and presentation of the game, including the introduction of an opening ceremony and a one-match kickoff event.

His vision is more aligned towards entertainment and spectacle, similar to the Super Bowl. Although it is a bold call, it has the potential to transform the event into a truly global spectacle. Whether his proposals are implemented or not, it is clear that the Champions League needs to evolve if it wants to remain the biggest club soccer competition in the world.
