Does Emma Hayes' rejection of mind games make her a better or worse manager than Sir Alex?

All the elite sports personnel have something or the other in common. And when it comes to Emma Hayes and Sir Alex Ferguson, it’s pretty obvious that they were serial winners with 31 major titles. Both of them were triumphant in such a way that predicting their rivals to have very little chance wouldn’t be an exaggeration. The UWSNT coach, in fact, confessed to being somewhat similar to the former Manchester United manager. We know both have had multiple attacking and defensive intricacies in their management. But Hayes now unexpectedly disclosed the one Ferguson tactic she never adopted in her career.

According to the Englishwoman, her approach toward the players was calm, which is the need of the day. As per the Guardian Hayes stated, “I’ve never been a shouter and screamer because my dad did it to me. I hated it. However, you learn to communicate differently as players today are very much a nonconfrontational generation. They’d rather you texted or WhatsApped them. They say they want the truth, but they don’t really want the interaction,” suggesting the sensitivity to understand players.

This is a major dissimilarity with the former Manchester United coach, known for being a stringent disciplinarian with his players. From their appearance to results, there was no way the Scottish manager could compromise his players meeting the standards. Fergie wouldn’t spare David Beckham, Ruud van Nistelrooy, or even Cristiano Ronaldo in his nascent days, despite possessing an excellent work ethic.

Sir Alex even confessed about it in the past, saying, “People will give a manager plenty of opportunities to crack the whip, so it’s best to pick and choose your moments,” without hesitation. Meanwhile, latitude is one way Hayes maximized her players’ potential apart from creating a delightful environment off the pitch. Despite the difference, Hayes fits into the 13-time Premier League-winning manager’s shoes comfortably.

Emma Hayes correlates to Sir Alex Ferguson’s personality

Both Emma Hayes and Sir Alex have already been the best managers in England. While Manchester United won 13 Premier League titles, the most in the English top-flight, Chelsea has already done it 7 times in a brief history. Nevertheless, it is not the numbers, but Hayes claims Sir Alex Ferguson was the first to message her after the Olympic gold. Both the icons are known to stay connected with Hayes, claiming, that the ex-United coach gave a heads-up while leaving Chelsea, suggesting how difficult it is to leave a club you love.

Moreover, Hayes also kept the newly appointed USMNT manager’s call on hold to speak to Sir Alex last year. Nonetheless, she has taken up a different task altogether, and Hayes will try to continue her winning spell. While the Paris Games were the first step, there is a long way to go. And with her way of dealing with her team, Hayes’ mantra to success also seems to work revealing the diversity of the beautiful game.
