Kylian Mbappe had won the FIFA World Cup as a teenager. However, in his fabled ongoing stint, he has never won a UEFA Champions League. This season, Mbappe got close to having his UCL hopes shattered in the group stage. Thanks to his attacking prowess and Warren Zaire Emery’s goal, Paris Saint Germain qualified for knockouts with a draw. Surely, PSG got some breathing space. But have they got the guns to go all the way and win their first-ever Champions League? Soccer veteran Alan Shearer thinks not.

Kylian Mbappe is undoubtedly in top form lately. He delivered for PSG in the UCL group stage when it mattered the most. However, some group-stage matches saw the French soccer club struggle and collapse. Apparently, Shearer did not shy away from putting PSG’s title contention in a dubious light.

The UEFA Champions League and potential title winners became a talking point in a recent episode of the ‘Rest is Football’ podcast. One host, Micah Richards, observed that Kylian Mbappe and co. resisted well against Borussia Dortmund. Their teamwork has prompted Richards to label PSG a favorite for the silverware.

Soon, Shearer intervened. “I obviously watched them [PSG] closely at home when Newcastle played them and away. No, I haven’t been convinced by them. I may be wrong. But I’d be amazed if they went all the way,” said Alan Shearer.

As Alan Shearer rightly pointed out, PSG’s outings against Newcastle United were far from convincing. At their home ground, PSG settled for a diminishing draw after Kylian Mbappe scored a late penalty to equalize. When PSG played Newcastle at St James Park, they got plundered 4-1.

Besides, the club had only managed to win two group-stage matches out of six. Therefore, Shearer is not wrong to remain unconvinced after witnessing the team’s struggle throughout the group phase. Further aggravating PSG’s prospects, Mbappe the team’s tactics during their match against Dortmund, upset the World Cup winner.

It was do-or-die for PSG when they faced Dortmund in the last group match. They badly needed at least a draw to see the knockout phase. After his side equalized, Luis Enrique wanted them to settle for a draw. The players adhered to the Spanish boss’s tactics and slowed down in the match. However, Kylian Mbappe wanted to go all guns blazing on the offense and push for a win.

His teammates stuck to the coach’s words and left him annoyed. Luis Enrique responded to the debacle and stated that Mbappe’s frustration was reasonable. However, the French striker has not yet responded to the coach’s words or his change in tactic. Anyhow, leaving a player like Mbappe unhappy is no good news for the Parisian team. Do you think he will stay and win the coveted trophy?
