That makes it the most-watched men's World Cup telecast in English-language TV history and the most-watched men's World Cup Final in U.S. history.

The road to the finals was full of action. A very close match between the Netherlands and Argentina, a 2-0 win against Croatia, and very smooth sailing by France are what led to the Finals. They glued everybody to the TV as the game began. According to reports, Fox Sports had 16.8 million viewers watch the match, which is a record.

The hype couldn’t beat ‘that FIFA World Cup final’
Although the match became the most-watched men’s final in US TV history with 16.8 million watching in English, this match still trailed behind the record of Fox Sports that was made back in 2015. The match was USA vs Japan, the 2015 FIFA Women’s world cup final.
That match averaged a whopping 23 million viewership as fans glued to the screen to watch USWNT beat Japan 5-2. We can note various factors which affect the viewership. First and foremost, it was the US team playing in the finals, makes sense that the nation would want to watch more. It also helps that they telecast the match live at 7 PM, a time slot that has a lot of viewership. They telecast the final between France and Argentina at 10 AM.

Although this shouldn’t tarnish the hype that was generated during this match. Google CEO Sundar Pichai informed that they recorded record-breaking traffic on google while the match was going on. Even the post that Lionel Messi made on his Instagram became the most liked Insta post ever.
