Cristiano Ronaldo returned to Manchester United at the behest of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2021. With Ronaldo unhappy at Juventus, the former United manager and former president Ed Woodward seized the opportunity to bring the prodigal son back to Old Trafford. Although Ronaldo’s infamous second stint saw him be the best goal-scorer for the club, with 19 goals in 40 Premier League games, it seems the Norwegian manager now repents his decision.
Looking back at his time at United, Ole states that it was about taking the next step to challenge for the title. Nevertheless, his choices would have far-ranging effects on the managers that would eventually follow suit.

It is not just Solskjaer but rather Cristiano Ronaldo, who has had a fair share of problems with his former clubs. There was disagreement with Florentino Perez when he left Real Madrid at the height of his career while he also left United for Al Nassr after a controversial interview with Piers Morgan. Though performing at the top level, Ole shares his thoughts on Ronaldo’s time at Old Trafford in an interview with the Athletic.
The former United player said, “It was a decision that was very difficult to turn down and I felt we had to take it, but it turned out wrong. It felt so right when he signed and the fans felt that at that Newcastle game.”
Ole further added, “When Old Trafford was rocking after Ronaldo scored twice in a 4-1 win over Newcastle United. He was still one of the best goalscorers in the world, he was looking strong.”
Being a United icon, someone adorned by the fandom, it was a big achievement for the relatively inexperienced Norwegian manager when he got the call for the United job. He states when you get the Manchester United call, you sacrifice everything.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was hired as caretaker manager after Jose Mourinho in 2018, became a fan favorite after his miraculous win over PSG in the second leg of the UCL. United lost the first leg 2-0 at home in the round of 16 but put on a great comeback as they went on to win 1-3 at Parc Des Princes. United advanced to the next stage on away goals. This became the turning point in his career as the fans and players sang “Ole’s at the wheel” and his interim role was made permanent.
The win away at Etihad beating rivals Manchester City, and going unbeaten in 29 away league games was the highlight of his career at United. Things though took a turn soon after, losing the finals on penalties to Villareal and then also losing 5-0 to Liverpool. The 4-1 loss against Watford was the nail in the coffin. Ole was sacked the next day. The Norwegian had a lot of success with United but the only thing missing was a trophy to show for it, he guided United to a second-place finish in his last full season.
