If you go on X and search England, two people might seem like the most despised individuals of all time. England head coach Gareth Southgate is the obvious choice, with fans and experts not pleased with how the manager has led the team in the Euros. Surprisingly, the second name is Trent Alexander-Arnold, with fans questioning the player’s place in the team.

It’s a little shocking to see Trent Alexander-Arnold’s place in the team being brought up, considering he is one of the best defenders in the camp. However, the player is not playing his regular role for the Three Lions. With the defender doing a good enough job in the midfield for Liverpool, Gareth Southgate felt it was the right move to play the defender in the midfield for the national team.

Well, the move has backfired as the player looks lost in the flow. Despite that, ex-English star Jamie Carragher believes fans are in a hurry to judge the player and it’s not Trent Alexander-Arnold’s fault that he is playing in the midfield. While talking to SkySports before the Denmark game, Carragher, stated, “Yes, you all are right. It is not his position. I mean, we got to remember why he’s playing there. He’s playing there because the options aren’t great.”

Carragher then questioned the quality in England’s ranks while naming Conor Gallagher, adding, “There isn’t the quality in the central midfield for England, that’s why he’s playing there. It’s not just the case of Oh let’s try a fullback in the midfield. He’s got passing ability, which is an actual class. That is of no doubt, and England are short of central midfielders. Connor Gallagher, I’m a big fan in the Premier League, but on the international level, there are question marks there.”

While Jamie did his best to back the player during the interview, it seems like Trent Alexander-Arnold’s performance in the midfield against Denmark was enough to change his mind.

It didn’t take long for the former Liverpool star to question Trent’s actions just hours after backing him as England’s central midfielder. Carragher claimed Trent Alexander-Arnold alongside Declan Rice played too deep inside their team’s box. That in return did not allow the center backs to move outside and help the team fluently transition into attack. England struggled to make an impact against Denmark, as the Danes dominated most of the contest.

While Gareth Southgate subbed off Trent for Conor Gallagher in the second off, the game seemed out of England’s control. The Three Lions were completely outplayed by their opponents and will hope they can find their rhythm as they take on Slovenia in their final fixture of the tournament.
