Does Rodri's Ballon d'Or win mark a long-overdue shift in recognizing unsung soccer heroes?

The Ballon d’Or is soccer’s top prize, often given to the most exciting players. But this year, Spanish midfielder Rodri of Manchester City broke the mold and thrilled fans. However, Rodri’s win sparked criticism, especially from Real Madrid and Vinicius Jr., a top attacker. Yet, this backlash seems off. A USMNT legend, Alexi Lalas, labeled Real Madrid’s response as “weak sauce.” He believed Rodri’s win was justified and highlighted how his talent is often overlooked.

Responding to a tweet that called Real Madrid’s reaction to Rodri winning the award “childish” Lalas said: “Rodri winning is completely justifiable. Any team would want him.” He touched on an important point that the Ballon d’Or is “dominated” by players who score. Arguing against this tendency, Lalas noted that “Rodri is just a necessary momentary cleansing.” He added, “Real Madrid’s reaction was weak sauce.”

For most, soccer is a simple equation, where the player who manages to score the most goals or assists most certainly takes home the trophy. This obsession with stats and flashy plays usually makes midfielders and defenders look like shadows, though they are just as important to the team’s success. Yet, Rodri’s win marks that refreshing moment of recognition of these unsung heroes. As the powerhouse behind Manchester City’s midfield and tactical mastermind, Rodri’s role in his team’s successful season can’t be overstated.

Real Madrid and its star winger, Vinicius Jr. were understandably frustrated but perhaps overreacted. Vinicius had a great season, leading Madrid’s attack. However, Madrid’s outright dismissal of Rodri’s win seemed to ignore the hard work of players like him.

Rodri’s Ballon d’Or probably justified over Vinicius Jr.’s snub

Does Rodri's Ballon d'Or win mark a long-overdue shift in recognizing unsung soccer heroes?

Have an interesting take?

Vinicius Jr. is one of the world’s best, thanks to his speed, skill, and scoring prowess. However, Real Madrid’s resentment over Rodri’s win suggests they prefer a traditional view. Their position solidifies the notion players like strikers and wingers should dominate the Ballon d’Or. This view, however, sidelines players like Rodri. His key contributions often go unrecognized.

Rodri’s Ballon d’Or case beats Vinicius Junior’s. As a defensive midfielder, he contributed 26G/A. He also won the Premier League, the Euro championship, and the Club World Cup. Rodri’s stats are impressive with 93% passing accuracy, 100 key passes, and 70% successful dribbles. These figures are crucial for the rankings. The Spanish player’s success in major tournaments and key metrics makes him unique. His influence goes beyond the typical CDM role.

Scoring players grab attention, but defensive midfielders are key too. Rodri offers tactical discipline, versatility, and game control. It automatically makes him vital. By recognizing Rodri, the Ballon d’Or expands its criteria. It acknowledges that success includes more than just headline players.

The Ballon d’Or has often favored attackers. Yet Rodri’s win signals a shift just like when Luka Modric won in 2018. It opens the door to recognizing all aspects of football’s greatness. This could inspire Real Madrid and players like Vinicius Jr. to value every role. Teams need scorers but also hard workers behind the scenes. Rodri is a prime example. His win is a victory for those who support the game without scoring.

The USMNT legend criticized Real Madrid’s response as “weak sauce.” This echoed a common fan sentiment. Soccer is much more than goals. It’s about heart, resilience, and intelligence. Rodri embodies these traits. His win deserves celebration, not dismissal.
