In soccer, when it comes to International representation, the pattern is pretty clear: Perform well at the club level, and a call-up to the international camp follows. With so many players to choose from, picking isn’t always difficult. However, Tyler Adams believes that playing under Mauricio Pochettino adds a unique dynamic.

The transition from domestic to international duty is often challenging. Players enter an environment with a different manager, new roles, new tactics, and sometimes even different playing positions. Using Malik Tillman as an example, Tyler Adams emphasizes that adapting to a distinct style of play requires time and practice.

Talent doesn’t necessarily translate from club to country. People need to understand it takes time for players to adapt, just like when you switch clubs, it takes time to adapt to a new club.” says the Bournemouth midfielder in an interview with ‘Men in Blazers’.

For other players, Malik Tillman for instance, it takes time for him to transition. In PSV, it’s so ball-oriented and he’s able to make so many final plays,” says Adams. Former USMNT player Charlie Davies had previously mentioned that it wasn’t on the Argentine coach to make Tillman comfortable in the new system.

Mauricio Pochettino’s play style demands more work-rate from his players, particularly those on the wing. A prime example is Antonee Robinson, whose revitalized role under the new head coach earned praise from Tyler Adams. On the other hand, Adams will be hoping for his first call-up under Pochettino now that he’s injury-free.

Can Mauricio Pochettino’s January camp be a chance for young talents?

The USMNT announced that they will be playing friendlies against Venezuela and Costa Rica as part of their stay in Florida. The last time they played Costa Rica at home, the hosts were stunned 2-0 in a 2022 World Cup Qualifying match. The match will take place on January 22 at the Inter & Co stadium, home of MLS side Orlando City SC.

In an official statement, Pochettino also revealed that he plans on using the January Camp as an opportunity to work with his MLS players. This could also be a golden opportunity for players returning from injury, like Chris Richards, Folarin Balogun, and, of course, Tyler Adams. However, doubt looms whether skipper Christian Pulisic will be available, having recently picked up a calf injury.

Historically, USMNT players who receive a call-up in January often go on to play in major tournaments. For Pochettino, this is the perfect opportunity to test his squad depth ahead of the Nations League semifinals against Panama in March. However, his ultimate test lies ahead, when the North American continent hosts the 2026 World Cup.
