Owning a sports franchise has become a trend for most celebrities these days. Having a sensational portfolio can boost the team’s brand image altogether. That’s why most celebrities invest in sports franchises, as it is the closest connection to fans in instilling a sense of pride in them. The perfect example one can put forward is the Wrexham connection of Ryan Reynolds, who completely transformed the soccer club. And now, he wants to own the NHL side Ottawa Senators. Apart from him, famous rapper Snoop Dogg is also interested in purchasing the franchise. To this craze, a marketing expert gave his opinion on the matter.
While fans considered Snoop to just joking around, he explained, “This ain’t no joke or no gimmick.” Aron Darmody, an associate professor of marketing at Carleton University in Ottawa, explained the reasons.

Darmody explained how owning sports franchises helps celebrities to create an image outside their field. According to BBC, Aron said, “It’s not about Ottawa per se, it really is just the fact that you have this sports franchise in one of the four major leagues in North America, and these franchises don’t always come up every day of the week. The very fact that one is available, clearly there is going to be interest.”
Darmody illustrated how having sports teams is referred to as “premium property” with the example of Michael Jordan purchasing the Charlotte Hornets in 2010. When Jordan purchased the Charlotte Hornets in 2010, the value was $180 million. But now, it has ended up being valued at $1.7 billion.
For every team to be successful, they have to create a connection with the fans. Ryan and Rob did it with Wrexham as they set up a documentary showcasing the process behind the scenes. Hence, it seems like the Ottawa Senators are another franchise that is hot in the market.

After the success at Wrexham, Ryan Reynolds is preparing a bid of $1 billion along with an Ontario-based real estate company. As for Snoop Dogg, he joined hands with Los Angeles-based entrepreneur Neko Sparks to purchase the sports franchise. Similarly, Forbes valued the franchise at $900 million, and the competition for it is expected to become more intense. Although reports emerged of Ryan being out of the race, one cannot say what happens in the final stages.
The next owners of Senators would have a job at their hands. Trying to bridge the connection between the fans and the players will be necessary. As the bidding war reaches its climax, will we see Ryan come back again and launch a bid?
