La Liga President has once again given another bunch of questionable statements, but this time, while citing examples of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. It is a sad moment for the world of soccer when one of its greatest platforms, La Liga, is tainted with racial injustice and abuse.

Recently, during a Spanish league match, Valencia CF’s fans brutally hurled racist slurs at one of Real Madrid’s players, the young sensation Vinicius Junior. Moreover, the handling of the incident and the approach of many authorities were also controversial, especially that of the president of La Liga, Javier Tebas.

Instead of standing up and condemning the racial attack, he criticized the actions of the young star. He even suggested that he should have informed himself properly. Following the incident, Tebas has been heavily censured for his statement which some saw as doubling down on racism instead of denouncing it.

On top of that, his recent statement has further raised eyebrows. Just hours ago, Tebas stated that two of the biggest soccer stars, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, have received the most insults in the past. He said, “The great players like Ronaldo and Messi were the ones who received the most insults. For one it was h*mophobic insults and for the other, it was intellectual disability”.

This statement has further made the public question the real intention behind it. This comparison only serves to create controversy and further harm the goal of eliminating racism instead of getting closer to it. Especially after what he had to say earlier.

Tebas lashed out at Vinicius Jr.

Following the racial abuse incident involving Vinicius Jr., many people – including notable names and fans – came together to revere him. However, Tebas had a different approach: instead of showing support, he criticized Vinicius on Twitter.

Tebas chastised the player for supposedly not understanding Laliga’s protocols when it came to dealing with racism incidents. He stated that before criticizing the league, it was necessary for Vinicius to “inform himself properly”. Tebas later apologized for this unfortunate remark and made it clear that his intention was never to attack the Brazilian star.
