“I want to say something that I can’t hate, but I can’t touch the Mexicans,” Pique shockingly said (Google Translate). It is unclear in what context this comment was made, but many found his choice of words extremely insensitive. Though the statement was seemingly made as a joke, the reality is that making such a statement is utterly unacceptable for many.

The reaction to Pique’s statement has been mixed. Some have chosen to ignore the comment while others have found this disrespectful. In his comments, Pique described the abusive attacks he received from fans of Shakira on social media. “My ex-partner is Latin American. You don’t know what I’ve received from her fans on social media. Thousands of barbarities,” the Spaniard said.

After hearing those words, Shakira delivered an empowering reply with a proclamation of her Latin American pride on Twitter. “Proud to be Latin American,” Shakira wrote on Twitter. She also accompanied her statement with flags of countries located in Latin America.
