Shakira and Gerard Pique have been under public scrutiny ever since their much-publicized breakup in June 2022. All the drama started after it was revealed that the soccer player had been unfaithful to Shakira, with his current girlfriend Clara Chia Marti. Since then, the ex-couple never seemed to be able to step out from the near-constant spotlight.

Just this month, Gerard Pique grew in the headlines after he made a questionable statement about Shakira’s Latin-American fan base and got accused of xenophobia. While this scandal around the parties started to cool down, on Thursday, the Spanish soccer icon made fresh news with a new controversy with a direct attack against Mexicans.

“I want to say something that I can’t hate, but I can’t touch the Mexicans,” Pique shockingly said (Google Translate). It is unclear in what context this comment was made, but many found his choice of words extremely insensitive. Though the statement was seemingly made as a joke, the reality is that making such a statement is utterly unacceptable for many.

The reaction to Pique’s statement has been mixed. Some have chosen to ignore the comment while others have found this disrespectful. For his part, Pique has yet to make any public comments on the matter. It remains to be seen what repercussions, if any, Gerard Pique will face for his controversial statement about Mexicans. Also if Shakira will have a say in this just like she did earlier with her “Latin American” comment.
