Manchester United has been in the crosshairs for more than a decade. Despite significant efforts to turn the tide, sporting setbacks continue to keep the English Premier League side in the glare of criticism. As they still breathe negative air, former club executive David Gill has offered Erik ten Hag a solution to deal with ongoing scrutiny by highlighting the ‘importance of confidentiality.’
This came in the latest podcast of ‘Rio Ferdinand Presents Five,’ where host Ferdinand questioned Gill about how he would deal with the negativity that comes out of the club. While acknowledging that it’s a difficult task, he said, “From an executive side, I would be getting my executive team together and saying, ‘Look, you go and press upon, the importance of confidentiality and being proper to the club.'” More than on-pitch performances, discipline issues surrounding key players have majorly brought the Red Devils into negative limelight in recent times.
Be it Jadon Sancho’s public feud with ten Hag or Marcus Rashford’s off-pitch shenanigans, fingers have unhesitantly been raised at the club. However, David Gill claims there is a solution for the Dutch manager. “On the football side, the manager presumably and his staff trying to tell the players about that [confidentiality],” he said. While highlighting that other rival teams like Manchester City and Liverpool never go through such negativity, he said, “We [United] have to get back to having doing better and I think there would be less negative stories.”

Rio Ferdinand backs Erik ten Hag over Jadon Sancho’s treatment
As fans questioned Erik ten Hag over his different treatment towards the English winger duo, Ferdinand sided with the United boss, insisting that treating two people equally is impossible since happenings behind the scenes can differ. “Sancho could have done ten things before that we don’t know about, and Rashford might have done three,” he said.

Ferdinand stressed the importance of having a deeper understanding of the situation. “I don’t think you can go blanket approach on everything and just say, ‘This is all the same. I’m throwing it all in the same basket.’” Instead, the former defender believes that each situation calls for a unique response and ten Hag did what he had to do.
