Newcastle United are still awaiting the scan results of Nick Pope prompting them to closely pursue de Gea. However, David de Gea will reportedly have to take a pay cut, if he were to join Newcastle United.

During his last season at Manchester United, David de Gea drew a $408,252 paycheck per week. Newcastle United’s wage structure is much lower and a move to St James Park would see the Spaniard fit to a lesser pay scale. Anyhow, de Gea’s Premier League mettle and his availability as a free agent make him a promising potential target for Newcastle.

Other contenders for Newcastle United’s goalkeeper position

While Nick Pope got injured, former Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka came to replace him and helped the side maintain a clean sheet in a 1-0 win over Manchester United. Another contender for Newcastle’s no.1 position is Loris Karius. Karius had earlier replaced Nick Pope in the 2023 EFL Cup Final after a prior red card forced the latter out of the matchup. Karius had then come off of a long hiatus and still showed his mettle with eight saves.

Mark Gillespie, who has returned to Newcastle in 2020 is yet another option the Magpies can try as a replacement for Nick Pope. However, Gillespie is yet to play a league game, despite returning to the club in 2020. While these potential no.1s within the Newcastle camp are worthy candidates, none of them boasts as impressive a resume as David de Gea. Therefore, the 33-year-old’s potential move to Newcastle cannot be ruled out. Do you think de Gea will don Newcastle colors and face Manchester United? Let us know in the comments below.
