David de Gea has been a free agent since leaving Manchester United back in July. However, recent reports suggest that the ex-Red Devils goalie may potentially find himself joining Newcastle United as a replacement for the injured Nick Pope. Rumors about this possibility have been circulating lately and a well-known pundit has weighed in, suggesting that the ‘lanky’ Spaniard would be a nice replacement.

The reason for Newcastle’s search for a new goalkeeper stems from Nick Pope’s unfortunate shoulder injury, which he sustained during their 1-0 win against Manchester United. With Pope sidelined for nearly four months, the club finds itself in need of a suitable replacement.

This whole saga recently became a talking point on ESPN UK. Italian journalist Gabriele Marcotti expressed his thoughts on the prospect of De Gea joining Newcastle United. “So I would strongly consider De Gea,” Marcotti stated.

He proceeded to highlight the similarities in build between David de Gea and Pope, which, in his opinion, make the Spanish goalkeeper a fitting replacement. “Also on the basis that in terms of the type of keeper he is. Even physically there is a lot of similarities between him and Pope,” added the pundit. “In terms of kind of like being sort of the tall, thin, lanky goalkeeper.”

In terms of looks, both goalkeepers are indeed pretty similar and with the 33-year-old also being a free agent, it is a perfect opportunity to make it happen. However, there is also a possibility that this may not happen and the reason was given by De Gea three months ago.

Ever since David de Gea became a free agent, there have been several rumors about his potential next club. There have been reports of him going to Saudi and even of a potential Man United return. However, the Spaniard clarified his requirements back in September. It was reported that he desires an offer from a club that values him as their first-choice goalkeeper.

If this condition is not met, he has indicated that he may retire from professional soccer. Newcastle’s offer poses a challenge to this proposition. Will De Gea still be considered Newcastle’s top choice once Pope returns? If not, it is unlikely that David de Gea will sign with Newcastle.
