7 Gold Cup, 3 CONCACAF Nations League, and a Pan-American games—that’s all the US Men’s National Team has managed to achieve over the years. Though these trophies are better than nothing, the dream for the Star and Stripes to lift a prestigious trophy, say a World Cup, remains incomplete. While it’s impossible to predict when that day will come or if it ever will, David Beckham believes it will happen ‘at some point’ ahead of the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino.

The Inter Miami owner was invited to the latest episode of the ‘First We Feast,’ to try out some spicy chicken wings with host Sean Evans, and also talk about life and soccer. Interestingly, while devouring the wings, he explained how the signing of Lionel Messi for his MLS club will bring a revolution to the US and will benefit the generation ahead. “I want to inspire the next generation of young kids that are playing in this country because, at some point, the US will win the World Cup,” he said.

Beckham feels that the presence of Messi is already elevating the status of America’s domestic competition. But more than that, it will also benefit the upcoming homegrown generation to step up for their nation and try to bring the prestigious trophy. That can happen anytime starting from now. But the real question stands would Mauricio Pochettino be the ultimate solution to all the problems that Team USA has been facing?

Unlike the women’s side who have had the honor of lifting the golden trophy four times, the men’s team is sitting empty-handed. The previous edition in 2022 saw them cross the group stages but were knocked out from the round of 16. More recently, they endured a group stage exit in the 2024 Copa America, that too, as a host nation.

The next World Cup which will be held in 2026 again sees the USA host the prestigious tournament alongside fellow neighboring countries Mexico and Canada. Once again, this makes it necessary for the American boys to tighten their seatbelts and give their best shot. For now, hope rests on the shoulders of Pochettino who is expected to do the best.

Speaking of which, there has been no sign of the former Tottenham manager at the US camp. So what’s the delay about?

While David Beckham sets the bar for USMNT, Mauricio Pochettino’s arrival may get delayed

What’s your perspective on:

Can Pochettino's magic turn USMNT into World Cup contenders, or is Beckham just dreaming?

Mauricio Pochettino was reportedly set to officially join the USMNT in Kansas City for their upcoming September friendlies against Canada. However, his contract situation with Chelsea remains unresolved, particularly regarding his severance package. The Blues owe the 52-year-old a substantial $13.2 million, as he left Stamford Bridge by mutual agreement after the Todd Boehly-led club decided to end his tenure despite having a year left on his contract. This entitles him to the full amount.

Despite this, Chelsea is in no rush to settle the payment, prolonging the process and creating an awkward situation for both the USMNT and Pochettino. Naturally, the USSF is eager for a swift resolution. It remains uncertain whether the former PSG manager will coach his first match against Canada. If there are no further delays in finalizing his deal with the USMNT, Pochettino is expected to be present and actively involved with the team for both friendlies.
