Cristiano Ronaldo‘s $500 million move to Saudi club Al Nassr may have raised eyebrows, but perhaps the move has reinvigorated his career. Ronaldo scored 2 goals in Portugal’s 3-2 win over Slovakia in their Euro 2024 qualifier, effectively guaranteeing Portugal’s qualification to the tournament that is to take place in Germany next year. This was also the Portuguese icon’s 200th game for his country.

Ronaldo increased his all-time goal-scoring record for Portugal, scoring what was his 124th and 125th goals for his home country. Shortly following his record-breaking achievement, the current Al Nassr forward’s mother Dolores Aveiro penned a heartfelt tribute to her son after the game.

Off the pitch, Ronaldo has always been close to his mother Dolores, and his siblings. Dolores reportedly cried her eyes out following Ronaldo’s appearance against Slovakia, following the losses the family has had to deal with recently. Now, following his brace for Portugal that saw the country book their place in the upcoming Euros next year, Ronaldo’s mother took to social media to congratulate her son.

Taking to Instagram, the Portuguese forward’s mother posted a picture with her son, along with a message that read: Son, happy day to you. I really enjoyed being with you yesterday 🙏🏻 ❤️”

Ronaldo captained Portugal in the win over Slovakia to maintain the nation’s 100% win record in the qualifiers. With this win, Portugal is top of Group J with 7 wins out of 7, racking up 21 points which has resulted in sealing their qualification for the Euros in Germany next year. Subsequently, Ronaldo’s numbers for Portugal in the qualifiers have been staggering.

The current Al Nassr star has turned back the clock despite being 38 at the moment in his performances for Portugal. Ronaldo converted from the penalty spot after Slovakia’s Denis Vavro was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box after a VAR review, to score his 124th international goal for his country in the 29th minute.

The veteran Portuguese forward then turned in a delightful cross by his ex-Manchester United teammate Bruno Fernandes in the 72nd minute to bag goal number 125. Portugal bagged the win, despite Stanislav Lobotka’s late goal in the 80th minute. Ronaldo’s record for Seleção das Quinas in the 2024 UEFA Euro qualifiers currently stands at 7 goals in 6 matches averaging 1.26 goals a game. He is also the 2nd highest goal scorer in the 2024 qualifiers only behind Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku who is 1st with 9 goals.

With his formidable goal-scoring record for Portugal, it’s certain that the mercurial Portuguese icon will look to push Portugal all the way to winning the Euros in Germany next year, after lifting the trophy in 2016.
