Cristiano Ronaldo went from tears to triumph last night. Jan Oblak humbled the Portuguese sensation and reduced him to tears with a penalty-kick save in extra time. Later on, when the game went into a shootout, Ronaldo had his revenge and returned as a victor. What is powering the 39-year-old to continue etching sublime tales of redemption?

It is perhaps the realization that his kith and kin have his back, even if the world stands against him. Ronaldo’s 69-year-old mother cried after seeing him bow his head because of the penalty miss. Soon enough, the Portuguese captain’s sisters chimed in with warm and empathetic words.

Ronaldo’s sister Elma Aveiro took to Instagram with an emotional message for his brother after Portugal beat Slovenia in the shootout. She posted a picture of CR7 in tears and wrote, “Only God, only God, your pain and ours, but you only show more and more the wonderful person and the great man and professional that you are the pride of my life.” Elma lauded the ‘great’ human in Cristiano Ronaldo, perhaps because he did not shy away from showing his emotions. His professionalism got the shout-out because he bounced back by converting his second penalty.

If Elma Aveiro acknowledged her brother’s display, can their sibling Katia Aveiro be far behind? Katia Aveiro took to Instagram stories and wrote, “Back off. Take a shot and win. It’s been a part of it always did. So proud of our national team, so proud of you. Thank you, Ronaldo. Thank you, boys.”

As for Cristiano Ronaldo, these warm words and gestures are the need of the hour to bounce back against France in the upcoming quarter-final. The Portuguese skipper admitted he hit rock bottom when he missed the penalty last night.

Cristiano Ronaldo discusses his sad thoughts after letting Portugal down last night

“Even the strongest people have their [bad] days. I was at rock bottom when the team needed me most. I was sad at first but now I’m happy. That’s what football is. Moments, inexplicable moments,” Cristiano Ronaldo said in a post-game interview.

Ronaldo later explained that this is the first time he has missed a penalty in years. However, he is ecstatic because his team won on penalties after losing twice in shootouts this season. Ronaldo meant Al Nassr and not Portugal by referring to his team’s penalty losses.

This season, Al Nassr lost in penalties in the AFC Champions League and the King Cup of Champions. Last night, he came close to the same nightmare with Portugal, but Diogo Costa’s strong arms did the job for the Selecao. Portugal next plays France in the quarter-final on Friday. Similar to Portugal, France too has struggled their way into the quarters. Therefore, we can expect a final before the final as the two heavyweights meet again.
