“I don’t have respect for him because he doesn’t show respect for me.” Do these words sound familiar? Well, those were the heated words Cristiano Ronaldo expressed about Erik ten Hag during his controversial interview with Piers Morgan back in 2022. This outburst marked the start of an ugly spat that has now resurfaced following Ten Hag’s dismissal from Manchester United.

Yes, that’s right. After two years, the Dutch manager has been let go by the Red Devils. Given the team’s lackluster performance under his leadership, this decision was hardly surprising. Following the announcement, one of Erik ten Hag’s staunchest critics—and a significant supporter of Cristiano Ronaldo—Piers Morgan didn’t hold back in criticizing him.

Just hours after the ex-Ajax boss’ exit was confirmed, Morgan took to his X account to vent about Erik ten Hag while recalling his conversation with the Al Nassr striker regarding him. He commented, “Every single word that Cristiano Ronaldo told me about Ten Hag in our explosive interview was born out of events.”

In that interview, CR7 made it clear: “If you don’t have respect for me, I’m never gonna have respect for you.” Highlighting this point, the English broadcaster added further condemnation: “He was an over-promoted, delusional, disrespectful, and thoroughly mediocre manager who couldn’t handle world-class talent or run a club that size.” Ouch!

Piers Morgan’s strong criticisms are hardly unexpected, as this isn’t the first instance of him challenging the 54-year-old regarding his treatment of Cristiano Ronaldo. He previously stated, “Ten Hag ruined Ronaldo’s time at United.” Now, let’s move on from past grievances and focus on the current situation that has ignited this conversation: the dismissal of Erik ten Hag and the circumstances surrounding it.

The sacking announcement came on the heels of Manchester United’s 1-2 defeat against West Ham, leaving the team positioned 14th in the league standings. Reports indicate a dwindling confidence in their Dutch manager, which prompted the decision to part ways. Initially, after winning the FA Cup against Manchester City, they extended his contract until the Summer of 2026; however, consistent disappointing results led to his unexpected termination.

In their statement, The PL side expressed gratitude saying, “We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.” Additionally, Ruud van Nistelrooy has been appointed as Interim coach. The club is also reported to have already started their search for a permanent replacement.

Not long ago, it was speculated that Manchester United might pursue Mauricio Pochettino as head coach. However, even that door is closed now as he has accepted a position with USMNT. It will be compelling to observe where Manchester United heads next.
