Has Ronaldo's move to Al Nassr tarnished his legacy, or is he still the GOAT?

Let’s be honest. The way Cristiano Ronaldo has been scoring in the Saudi Pro League, he looks like a talented baller having his prime time in his mid-twenties. But we know that the 39-year-old has been playing ball for the last two decades. Last year, he was the world’s top goalscorer, even Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe lost the race to the veteran. Naturally, we might think that the Portugal captain is the MVP of Saudi League strikers. Well, not as long as a defending Saudi League champion from Serbia plays striker.

Aleksandar Mitrovic’s English Premier League stint wasn’t the best a player could have asked for. Though he was a decent goalscorer in his final phase in Fulham, his team failed to shine in the English league. He definitely did not raise the stakes like Cristiano Ronaldo in his first Manchester United stint. But Mitrovic, thanks to his stellar start with Al Hilal seems to be better off than Ronaldo. At least, a group of Saudi Sports Company journalists think that the Al Hilal striker is overshadowing CR7.

” I mean the most dangerous striker in the league right now is Mitrovic., 4 matches, 8 goals, and he scores every 45 minutes. This is a big start for Mitrovic,” said an SSC journalist during a channel talk show. After seeing Ronaldo being overlooked as the ‘dangerous’ Saudi League striker, fellow journalist Mohamed Gohar observed that Mitrovic is hellbent on beating the Al Nassr captain in the race for the Golden Boot.

“You have a forward like Mitrovic meaning 8 goals in 4 games, 2 every match in every tournament, he’s honestly scoring. Clearly, he’s in it to deny Cristiano Ronaldo the top goal-scorer title this season,” Gohar said. Since Mitrovic’s numbers are the talk of the town, let’s see how Ronaldo is doing.

Cristiano Ronaldo has a huge gap to bridge while Al Nassr’s gap with Al Hilal is wider

It won’t be extra to say Cristiano Ronaldo has not had a blazing start to the Saudi Pro League season. He has been hit by a viral infection, forcing him to miss a league game and also rest during a King Cup tie. Besides, he has netted three goals from four matches so far. That’s not bad for a 39-year-old. But, remember, Mitrovic has eight in four, averaging two goals a game. Considering Ronaldo’s form in last season, he could bounce back to these averages. Nevertheless, age and proneness to injury could take a toll on the Portuguese veteran.

Moreover, Al Nassr is plummeting in the league table each day. Having won two games and drew two, the yellow team is currently the fifth seed in the SPL. After sweeping all four games, Al Hilal is the top seed in Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, Ronaldo’s long-time teammate Karim Benzema is closely trailing Mitrovic with five goals in the top scorer’s race. So, it’s high time we see the 5x-Ballon d’Or winner back to top form.
