Coaching a player as legendary as Cristiano Ronaldo is a dream for many managers. The 5-time Ballon d’Or winner has racked up 50 goals in the calendar year and has yet again proved himself to be among the best players in the world. Portugal Manager Roberto Martinez is no different, as the Spanish tactician lavished praise on his captain citing his elite mentality. It seems that CR7 will continue to be an integral part of Martinez’s plans despite his advanced age.
Roberto Martinez took over the Portugal coaching position in 2023. And Ronaldo in particular would have appreciated this change considering his relationship with Fernando Santos had seemingly soured towards the end.

The Spanish manager detailed what makes the 38-year-old soccer icon unique. Martinez said, “Cristiano Ronaldo is influential, he is contagious, and he is a natural winner.” Martinez would be hoping his mentality will rub off on his teammates. Moreover, the Spaniard also spoke about Ronaldo’s drive to be the best.
Martinez explained, “He has been with the national team for 20 years, but he will play a new match with the same obsession to be the best.” Martinez also added no player has had Ronaldo’s success in a 20-year career. However, he did praise another senior player in the squad-Pepe. As per Martinez, both Ronaldo and Pepe share some qualities.
Do you see anyone in the national team following Cristiano's path, athletically and mentally?

He revealed, “When they are in training, it is as if this is the first time they are in the national team. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before“. High praise indeed from the manager. As per Martinez, a key reason for CR7’s longevity was his ability to adapt his game tactically. What could be the tactical change being talked about here?
CR7’s tactical evolution explained
Martinez said, “He is no longer a one-on-one athlete, with individual play, but the quality of movement in the area is superlative.” The statement is quite clearly backed up by data. During the 2019-20 season, the Al Nassr man completed 53 dribbles. However, this number fell to 20 in the 21-22 season. A reduction of more than half.

However, the reduced dribbling threat doesn’t seem to have affected Ronaldo’s goal-scoring prowess. He remains the top scorer in the SPL with 16 goals. Moreover, his new playstyle means Ronaldo could extend his playing career since he doesn’t have to rely on his pace much. Perhaps, a masterclass at the 2026 World Cup is on the cards.
