Cristiano Ronaldo’s time in the Premier League is over for good, but his legacy is alive through Alejandro Garnacho. The Argentine starlet plays in CR7’s preferred left flank and occasionally brings out the ‘Siu’ after scoring goals. For Garnacho, CR7 remains an idol and the ‘Greatest of all time‘ and hence, it is no surprise why he mimics the celebrations. But, how does the 5-time Ballon d’Or feel regarding Garnacho emulating the ‘Siu’? Manchester United star Diogo Dalot reveals an interesting anecdote regarding the same.

On the Cronache di Spogliatoio podcast, Dalot revealed an incident during Manchester United’s 2022 Europa League campaign. Dalot said, “Before a game against Real Sociedad, Garnacho went to Cristiano Ronaldo to ask if he could celebrate like him when he scored a goal.” Per the Manchester United fullback, CR7 was elated. Dalot explained, “Cristiano turned around, tapped me on the shoulder, and said, ‘Did you hear that? He wants to celebrate like me! Shall we say yes?’”

Garnacho’s dream came true as the youngster scored his first senior goal against Real Sociedad. Poetically, it was assisted by none other than Cristiano Ronaldo. As planned, an ecstatic Garnacho went out and performed CR7’s celebration. Surprisingly, it was not the iconic ‘Siu’ but rather Ronaldo’s ‘nap’ celebration.

However, it didn’t take long for Garnacho to bring out the ‘Siu’. In 2023, the young winger scored a stunning overhead kick against Everton. Following this, he brought out Cristiano Ronaldo’s trademark celebration. Unfortunately, the act was not well-received and the Argentine winger was slammed for the celebration. In fact, countryman Angel Di Maria too voiced his displeasure at Garnacho copying the Portuguese icon’s antics.

It’s not a secret that Argentines prefer Lionel Messi over Cristiano Ronaldo. After all, the Portuguese star was Messi’s main rival for the biggest prizes for close to two decades. Messi’s mate Angel Di Maria doesn’t seem too happy that the prodigiously talented Garnacho is celebrating CR7 style. Di Maria had said, “The only thing I wouldn’t do is celebrate Cristiano. I would score the goal and I would do like Messi does. I’ll stick with that.”

Other than this feeble criticism, Di Maria has high hopes for his countryman. The World Cup winner added that Garnacho has searing speed with incredible ability. For Di Maria, all that remains for Garnacho is to gain more experience and handle his head. With how he has performed this season, it’s safe to say that Garnacho has proved Di Maria right.
